The primary objective of this course is to help professionals understand the principles of in-situ stress and rock mechanics, and learn how to apply them profitably in today's energy industry. We will introduce you to the basic principles of in-situ stress rock mechanics, measurement and determination of stress in inclined boreholes, as well as industry applications. Course participants emerge with a clearer understanding of how geomechanics can be used to reduce non-productive-time and optimize production. Attendees will be introduced to state-of-the-art software tools and problem solving techniques used by GMI in consulting engagements worldwide to maximize the asset value. The course outline is below.

Development Geomechanics

  • The Tectonic Stress Field – Basic Principles
  • Pore Pressure and Stress in Sedimentary Basins
  • Rock Physics
  • Rock Failure
  • Fractures and Faults in Three Dimensions
  • Stress Concentrations Around Wells
  • Estimation of SHmax from Wellbore Failure
  • Directional Drilling Constraints
  • Maximizing Wellbore Stability
  • Critically Stressed Fractures and Faults
  • Dynamic Constraints on Hydrocarbon Accumulation
  • Injection, Water Flooding and Hydraulic Fracturing
  • Production-Induced Faulting and Compaction
